Once a simple village, Suresnes has undergone a remarkable evolution. Its hillsides, once covered with vineyards producing a famous wine, attracted kings and wealthy Parisians who built vast estates here. Mont Valérien, overlooking Suresnes, was home to a religious calvary in the 17th century, attracting pilgrims. Guinguettes (dance halls) on the banks of the Seine kept the local economy alive until the early 20th century.
The Industrial Revolution transformed the town's appearance, replacing the old mansions with aeronautical and automobile factories. The emblematic socialist mayor Henri Sellier spurred social change, including the construction of the Cité-jardin de Suresnes. During the Second World War, Mont-Valérien was the scene of shootings of resistance fighters, anchoring Suresnes in the national memory.
Today, Suresnes, linked to the Ile-de-France transport network, is part of the Greater Paris metropolis and offers a dynamic living environment, close to the La Défense business center and the Bois de Boulogne.
